The success of the salon as a stable for young talent with a string of awards and in particular as an innovator in colour had me thinking of a ‘laboratory’. A laboratory for the science of colour and for nurturing minds. As we’d done before, the salon owner Bex Brent and I wished to celebrate the building itself with it’s quirks and eccentricities whilst injecting the strong innovative feminine edge that Bex herself represents and champions. This ‘insertion’ into the first floor warehouse plays on a movement from light to dark, it’s expressed with delicate forms in the strongest of materials beside dark sheer drops of fabric. Meanwhile the statuesque mirrors reflect all of these elements upon the building itself. In the middle of it all is the ‘lab bench’ as close to the mark as possible. My brief is always open here at Willis York but functionality is key. The steel shelving exposes the tubes of colour creatively yet it’s entirely practical for the hairdressers to work from. The lab bench has been custom designed to take exactly what is required, with longer drawers for rolls of foil and inset bins for waste and recycling. I’m a kid in a candy shop with a brief like this! I was asked to inject a bit of glamour, femininity and fun into the space. I chose to play with a fanciful take on Victoriana but paramount the space needed to have room to grow and morph to the creative owner's whims. It is an ever changing environment and there is something new to see every visit - the interior elements lend themselves to this. This, and the Flos pendant, whose lines echo the shape of the ceiling, ensure that the room feels just as relaxed and graceful as the adjacent bedroom completed a few years before. The client has a wonderful collection of inherited Hong Kong Rosewood furniture which set the tone for the timber joinery throughout. KDID was asked to advise on the kitchen design choosing finishes and surfaces, to design the ensuite joinery, lighting, paint colours, tiles, flooring, window treatments and finally the upholstery and soft furnishings to highlight and complement the very elegant and sculptural furniture. Thirty years on from its inception the Arts and Crafts influence provides the ideal foundation for its current owners personal style. In 2019 KDID and Alan’s daughter Amelia of Minty Architecture, were commissioned to bring the home and interiors up to date to suit a busy family of five. The brief included the complete uplift replacement of tiles and underfloor heating throughout, walls moved to increase floorspace and improve flow, the swimming pool refresh and new kitchen, laundry, bathrooms and joinery throughout. KDID blended contemporary and classic detailing, custom furniture, our trademark bespoke joinery, and layers of texture and pattern to create an elegant family home. A concrete ledge beneath the row of windows proved to be the perfect depth for a bespoke medicine cabinet and the wall hung vanity with lighting below was designed to sit lightly without cutting in to the footprint of the room. Pale finishes: blonde and standard American oak cabinetry, white terrazzo floor and the softest shade of pink on the walls, are offset by the green-grey mosaic of the rear wall. The overall effect is calm and elegant with a hint of fun in the turned oak details and the curved mirror cut outs. Here I introduced our client to Renalls Joinery whom we worked closely with to get to this very elegant result. Bespoke extractor cabinetry designed by KDID. The glazed door through to the dining room replaces a 1950’s style hatch and was copied from other doors in the house and executed beautifully by Renalls Joinery.
